The Bruton Parish Church is the oldest structure in Williamsburg, dating back to 1683. The colonists originally built it to house two separate parishes in the Virginia colony, and to this day, it is an active place of worship for Episcopalians.
Like most old colonial buildings in Virginia, it was used as a field hospital to house wounded soldiers during the Civil War. After the Battle of Williamsburg, almost 100 Confederate soldiers would be laid to rest at the Bruton Parish Church.Â

The wife of colonial Reverand Jones is also buried in the cemetery. She passed away due to complications of childbirth.
When Reverend Jones’s wife was lying on her deathbed, he confessed his unconditional love to her. He claimed that he would never be with another woman for the remainder of his days. Once she passed, Jones left Williamsburg for quite some time.Â
Three months later, Jones returned with a tombstone bearing his deceased wife’s name. However, some residents claim to have seen the late Reverand’s wife roaming the church’s grounds after her burial. Rumor had it that her spirit couldn’t rest peacefully until she reunited with her husband.
Unfortunately, her spirit wasn’t pleased with what, or rather who else, he had brought back with him: a new wife!. After Reverand Jones arrived in Williamsburg with his new wife, the appearances of his deceased lover didn’t stop. People would still see her at the church. Only now she didn’t seem very happy.
