What Are Some Scary Facts About Lake Tahoe?

Considered one of the most haunted lakes in America, Lake Tahoe harbors many odd tales and truths within its sapphire recesses and surrounding waterfront. While its shores are marked with haunting structures like the Thunderbird Lodge, its watery depths are equally as spooky. Here are just a few terrifying facts about this otherworldly, blue body of water:

  • Lake Tahoe is the deepest lake in North America, measuring 1,645 feet at its deepest point. This makes it ideal for concealing its resident monster, Tahoe Tessie.
  • Washoe legends tell of a giant man-eating bird, Ong, who devours unsuspecting men near the lake, along with tales of powerful entities known as water babies.
  • An average of seven drownings occur in Lake Tahoe every year — due to its deep and icy vastness, the bodies aren’t always found.
  • The Donner Party suffered its infamous fate just 13 miles Northwest of Lake Tahoe. Those who didn’t succumb to death were forced to turn to cannibalism

Lake Tahoe's Tahoe Tessie

Lake Tahoe may not seem like an eerie location in the light of day, yet many who’ve stood by and gazed out at its inky blue expanse have sighted things that have compelled their jaws to drop. Some who have peered at its waters have even caught a glimpse of Lake Tahoe’s very own cryptid, Tahoe Tessie, whose sightings stretch back more than 100 years.

Like Loch Ness’ infamous beast, Tahoe Tessie is a large sea creature said to inhabit the depths of Lake Tahoe, sustained by its vast, cold waters. Whether she is a magical creature, as the Washoe legends suggest, or a vestige of the primeval era matters not. To see her is an awe-inspiring event one will never forget.

Thunderbird Lodge

Located on the East shore of Lake Tahoe, the Thunderbird Lodge contains a hefty amount of legends within its stony walls. Built by billionaire George Whittell as a second home, a host of spirits are believed to occupy this estate and its underground tunnels. It easily finds itself at the top of our list of most haunted places in Lake Tahoe.

Among its spooky inhabitants, you’ll find the ghosts of several individuals rumored to have died on the property, including a chef who fell victim to a bear attack and a worker who died in the old boathouse. Additionally, the spirit of Whittell himself has been supposed to linger in his home, as is his mistress, Mae Mollhagen.

Donner Party Campsite

Another lake not too far off from Lake Tahoe has been marked by a series of gruesome events. Donner Lake was the site where The Donner Party, a group of 87 people, found themselves stranded in the snow-ridden wilderness in 1846. Almost half would be dead by the spring of 1847, succumbing to sickness and starvation.

It is said their spirits wander the area around Donner Lake and Tahoe City, oftentimes after the very first snowfall—as if this somehow awakens the spirits from their slumber. Many unfortunate hikers have encountered the ghosts of the Donner Party and are left scarred by the terrifying sights and sounds of these cannibal ghosts.

The Legend of The Lady in White

Lake Tahoe has over 40 beaches around its vast blue waters, from Commons Beach to its more secretive nooks. While these beaches are often big party spots, like Zephyer Covve, those who visit them should be wary if they see an alluring woman dressed all in white.

No one knows the exact identity of Tahoe’s Lady in White, but she is believed to be traced back to the 1800s. A bride-to-be, she eagerly awaited her wedding day. However, fate had other plans for her in store.

As the story goes, a hopeful bride received a letter from her betrothed just before her big day. He wanted to break off the engagement. Not one to let a good dress go to waste, the dejected bride donned her wedding dress and descended into Lake Tahoe’s watery grave. Her spirit is said to lure young men fishing by the shore, enticing them to join her.

Hellman-Ehrman Mansion

Found on Lake Tahoe’s Western shore within the Sugar Pine Point State Park, the 1903 Hellman-Ehrman Mansion is as breathtaking as the beautiful surrounding scenery. No wonder its resident specters are so reluctant to leave. The long-time home of Florence Hellman and her husband Sydney Ehrman, this grand stony estate has stood for over 100 years.

The couple’s spirits seem to remain in the home, keeping a watchful eye on visitors. Park rangers and tour guides who frequent the property often attest to these claims. From time to time, rocking chairs roll and creak with no one in them, and the bed appears like an invisible force is sitting within it. To those who wish to visit this lavish dwelling, be mindful.

These spirits are kind but will let you know if you are unwelcome in one of Lake Tahoe’s most haunted places.

Pepper Tree Inn

Constructed in preparation for the 1960 Winter Olympics that graced Tahoe City, this seven-story structure was intended to shelter the scores of athletes and onlookers drawn to the historic event. It’s unlikely, however, that its founder ever thought it would house a ghost.

This towering inn in the heart of Tahoe City contains an unusual specter within its midst — one whose antics are quite jarring. The unknown spirit of the Pepper Tree Inn likes to lurk in the hallways and rattle the room service trays. Might this hungry ghost simply be looking for leftovers? If so, let’s hope they’re not a former member of the Donner Party.

Vikingsholm

This enchanting Norwegian castle sits on a parcel of land in Emerald Bay. Here, the spirit of its former owner is said to linger still. Although Swedish architect Lennart Palme designed the home, Lora Knight kept her hand in the process, traveling with Palme to Scandinavia for inspiration

Given her dedication to the project, it seems no surprise that she’s decided to reside here in the afterlife, reminding those who operate the tours of her home that she still remains. Occasionally, those who work within can even smell the scent of cinnamon, which used to grace Lora’s favorite breakfast.

Watson Cabin Museum

Built in the early 1900s, the Watson Cabin Museum is the oldest wooden building in the Lake Tahoe area. Erected from hand-cut logs and crafted from local stone from Lake Tahoe’s shores, it’s a remarkable structure—one that its long-dead builder likes to admire now and again.

The spirit of Robert Watson, who built this lakeside home for his son and his wife, stops in from time to time to admire his handiwork. He is often spotted on the back porch, sporting his signature tan cowboy hat and gazing out at the lake. His calm presence is sometimes accompanied by wind chimes tinkling, eliciting a feeling of peacefulness.

Cal-Neva Resort and Casino

Linking the border of California and Nevada, the Cal-NevaCasino is one of the most haunted places in Lake Tahoe and one of the few haunted by an assortment of renowned specters. The resident spooks are still making themselves known despite current renovations.

Once visited by glittering celebrities and nefarious mobsters, this site has been around for nearly a century, picking up several ghosts along the way. This sensational resort and casino was one of the last places Marilyn Monroe saw before she died of an overdose a week later. Her spirit, Frank Sinatra, and Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana are also said to kick up their heels at this once-famous haunt, whispering among the shadows.

Fannette Island

Known as the Hermit of Emerald Bay, former British sea captain Richard Barter may have died in the 1800s, yet his figure is still spied on foggy nights around Lake Tahoe’s Fannette Island. A wild and eccentric man passionate about adventure, his spirit is seen on cold nights when water vapor thickly clouds the air.

As his body was never found, the Hermit of Emerald Bay continues to haunt the island where he once dug his own tomb in the hope that he would eventually be buried there. Beware if on the shores of Lake Tahoe when the fog rolls in. Captain Dick Barter may be cloaked in its vaporous mist.
