Tampa’s Haunted History
Spanish explorer Ponce De Leon arrived in the area that is now Tampa, Florida all the way back in 1513. The Spaniards cast their attention away from western Florida, and worked to settle the eastern portion of the state first.
In 1824, just two months after the arrival of the first settlers, Tampa’s importance was recognized early on, when four companies of the U.S. Arm established Fort Brooke to protect the strategic harbor at Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay’s development began in 1845, when the territory became part of the United States. Despite the Civil War, the area grew steadily, with railroad expansion and lavish hotels popping up all along them. Alongside tourist traps and an impressive nightlife, Tampa is also home to more than a few ghosts. The city of Tampa was once even called “the damndest city this side of Hell,’ due to its seedy beginnings and history of rum runner. What better way to learn about the spectral bootleggers than with a Tampa Tipsy Spirits Haunted Pub Crawl?
