Welcome to San Juan Ghosts

The cruise ship hot spot responsible for creating the globally adorned Piña Colada is also home to unbelievable tales of shipwrecks and treasure, devilish creatures, the Fountain of Youth, and entities tethered to an eternal loop of their final moments. Walk a mile in the shoes of the locals and learn about San Juan’s rich and dark history that’s forced the living and the dead to coexist.

Legends Never Die

Located on a culmination of islands, San Juan boasts a vibrant social atmosphere, complete with a pulsating nightlife that’s enhanced by the Bacardi Rum Distillery nestled in the heart of the city. But the allure of these good vibes veil a dark side that remains undefeated, claiming souls and cursing the living. The city may be the birthplace of several cultural icons, but for every historical contribution, there’s a sinister alternative, such as the origination of the Chupacabra.

Stories of this vampiric creature extend throughout North and South America, each more horrific than the last. Before it became a tale to tell around the campfire, it began as a gruesome nightmare for locals. In the mid-70s, the city’s livestock and pets began turning up deceased, drained of their blood in a grisly, ritualistic fashion. For years, it was believed to be the work of satanic cults until, one day, the murderous creature showed itself.

As you venture with Puerto Rico Ghosts down Calle De Cristo, you’ll hear the unnerving details of the Chupacabra’s work. Uncover its dark legacy and the true accounts that left San Juan in a constant state of fear. Described as a large reptilian creature with bloodshot eyes, this ungodly beast has taken its bloody show on the road, becoming an urban legend for some and a menacing destroyer for the unfortunate.

But San Juan is its birthplace, with some believing it’s still the creature’s home. And you’re about to tread on the turf it shares with some of the city’s most chilling legends and the ghosts that are forever intertwined with them. Welcome to Puerto Rico Ghosts.

What Will I See?

Visit San Juan’s Most Haunted Locations, Including:

  • Hotel El Convento – This historic hotel was once a convent that served the community for nearly three centuries. The building was reopened as a luxurious hotel, but not even its holy past could protect it from tragedy. It’s believed that the hotel is haunted by the souls of those who sadly lost their lives at the El Convento beach, but they’re not the only ones who give the guests a fright.

  • Casa Blanca – This 500-year-old mansion was initially supposed to be the home of San Juan’s famous Juan Ponce de Leon, the Fountain of Youth seeker. He wouldn’t live to physically reside in the home, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t find his way in. Casa Blanca is said to be so haunted the owners brought in the show Haunted Collector for help. Try as they might, the building is still swarming with shadow figures and unexplained activity.

  • Cuartel de Ballaja – This historic building was once the barracks for the Spanish and Puerto Rican regiments during the Spanish-American War and played a role in World War II. The perils of these two deadly events left Cuartel de Ballaja teeming with otherworldly activity, residual from these violent eras. The spirits of the fallen soldiers are said to wander the barracks, still fighting a war from the great beyond.

The Family That Haunts Together…

Today’s technology has given hope to individuals looking to beat the aging process. But before the days of these popular procedures, tales of the Fountain of Youth ran rampant, resulting in a mass interest in this magic spring. One man famously ventured out to find it, and, in a way, he did. Juan Ponce de Leon would never make it back from his excursion, remaining forever 47.

Now operating as the Casa Blanca House Museum, the 500-year-old mansion that was meant to be his residence underwent various transformations before becoming the tourist attraction it is today. But it seems the long gone Ponce de Leon family have yet to relinquish their ownership, particularly Juan’s wife, Dona Ana de Ponce de Leon.

Visitors of the museum claim to have seen the widow roaming the halls wearing a white flowing gown, while others claim to have felt her presence. However, her spirit appears to be the calm one. Poltergeist-like activity, such as doors slamming, shutting, and locking on their own, became a common occurrence, terrifying one manager to the point of contacting SyFy’s Haunted Collector.

The Ponce de Leon family confirmed their presence, terrifying Demonologist John Zaffis’s team with unexplained creaking boards and a loud bang that made them flee the house. Puerto Rico Ghosts takes you to this historic site with centuries of haunted history and shadow figures that were so ominous security guards have been known to quit from fright.

The Hotel That Collects Souls

In San Juan, nearly every building boasts a rich history that goes as far back as the 16th century. Their preservation is flawless, allowing many of these buildings to now serve the public in more modern ways, such as Hotel El Convento. In the 17th century, this historic site was the home of Spanish noblewoman Dona Ana Lanzos y Menendez de Valdez. Today, it’s one of the more prestigious and most haunted hotels in Puerto Rico.

As the wife of a wealthy soldier, Dona Ana sadly became a widow when her husband lost his life during the fight against the Dutch campaign. She then devoted her life to God and converted her home to the Carmelite Convent, which would go on to become a prominent religious establishment and serve the community for nearly three centuries. In 1962, it was transformed into the luxurious hotel you’ll venture to with Puerto Rico Ghosts, but within its walls, the opulence is overshadowed by its collection of tortured souls.

Discover the nightly terrors that taunt the guests of Hotel El Convento. Both visitors and staff have reported the inexplicable flickering of lights in the hallways, while others have been completely creeped out by windows swinging open on their own. Other reports include the chilling feeling of being touched by an invisible hand that’s icy cold. But why would a former place of holiness be plagued by hair-raising haunts?

It’s believed that it’s filled with the souls of those who have perished in the waters of the El Convento beach over the years. As if written for a horror film, the hotel has become a trap for the spirits that met an untimely end. Their story is one of the many you’ll hear with Puerto Rico Ghosts.

Why is San Juan so Haunted?

War Rages On In The Afterlife

Puerto Rico’s beginnings were marked by war, tragedy, and death. Its people remained resilient, however, particularly those defending San Juan. As you walk the aged streets of San Juan with Puerto Rico Ghosts, you’ll be exposed to its deep, dark history and learn more about the buildings that were central to the devastation and perils of war. Take a Puerto Rico Ghosts tour to hear the tumultuous details that turned Castillo San Felipe del Morro (AKA El Morro) into a hot spot for paranormal investigators.

Today, El Morro is a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site that holds a significant place in history. The fortress took 250 years to build, and following its completion, it protected soldiers from incoming attacks that approached from the sea. But war leaves nothing and no one unscathed, and the building is now one of the most haunted in Puerto Rico.

Hear the terrifying accounts of distressed moans coming from the dungeon levels, believed to be those of former prisoners. Visitors have experienced the heart-stopping sight of soldiers wandering the building, some disappearing into the walls before their very eyes. The otherworldly activity is so profound that Ghost Hunters International filmed an episode inside the fortress.

Their findings confirmed the building’s status as certifiably haunted, solidifying every witness’s fear that the apparitions they’d seen were, in fact, real. Puerto Rico Ghosts takes you on a journey through a disastrous era that spawned these spine-chilling haunts and introduces you to the darkness that dwells within the walls that were meant for safety.

Why San Juan’s Past Continues to Be Resurrected

San Juan is a magical place filled with incredible culture, incredible people, and a history made for fairytales. The stories of the city, however, are anything but a Disney movie. Walk with Puerto Rico Ghosts to the original main entrance to the city, Puerta de San Juan, where we’ll lift the veil and give you a peek into this makeshift portal to the mystic.

This historical monument you’ll see before you was built to protect the city as well as act as a port of entry for important visitors from Spain. The magnificent entryway was spared from demolition and remains a magical piece of architecture that doubles as a gateway to the great beyond.

It’s said that a cross was placed in the walls of Puerta de San Juan in an attempt to protect it from evil. This, of course, would do nothing for the wickedness that occurred outside its walls. As if designed for the ethereal, Puerto Rico is one of the points of the Bermuda Triangle, a phenomenon believed to be responsible for a variety of eerie, unexplained events, including the vast amounts of shipwrecks that washed up on San Juan’s shores.

Join Puerto Rico Ghosts for a firsthand look at the site of mystery, where some of the ships lucky enough to make it through the Bermuda Triangle were ripped to shreds by the agitated sea or pillaged by pirates. Buried treasure surrounds Puerta de San Juan, and so do the souls that refuse to let anyone take it from them.
