This stunning theater opened on June 14th, 1929. It was a beacon to the world, saying, “San Antonio is here!”
Four thousand people shuffled into their seats and took in a movie on a screen larger than their home.
But the biggest attraction, more so than any star or musician, was the temperature. Yep — the Majestic Theater was the first theater in Texas to be fully air-conditioned.
Men and women proudly wore their winter coats in the middle of summer. Apparently, the theater managers cranked up the cooling so much there was snow on the marquee!
When the Great Depression hit, less than a year after opening, the Majestic shuttered its doors. Luckily, the owners quickly realized people needed entertainment amid national tragedy and had a grand re-opening, marketing the theater as a place where your worries don’t exist.
The allure of this theater is so great that some performers have kept putting on a show.
In the mid-1940s, a ballet troupe came and performed a twirling and mesmerizing piece before a packed audience. After the intermission, a light from overhead came loose, fell, and crushed one of the principal dancers. The audience rushed out, and the touring dancers all went home—all except for one.
Late at night, when only the ghost light illuminates the stage, the janitors and night guards often see a soloist performing leaps and bounds. She lands each jump as if on a cloud, utterly silent in her movements.
She is replaying her final moments over and over, only this time she gets to complete her hypnotic dance.
The architects of the Majestic Theater ensured the nosebleeds could hear a whisper on stage without any sort of electronic amplification. The shape of the domed ceiling carries a voice throughout the room.
These stellar acoustics are perhaps why there are so many reports of mysterious whispers in every corner of the theater. Someone behind the stage warming up is audible from the top tier of the balcony.
The only issue with this theory? The whispers continue even when the theater is closed for the night. Audiences-past enjoyed the show so much that a part of them stayed in their seats waiting for another show.
An eerie presence fills the empty seats, and some say that the theater has never truly been empty since opening night.
