Stories Come to Life in Pocomoke Forest
Within the walls of the Princess Anne Library, storybooks transport readers to far away lands. In Princess Anne, though, the lines between fantasy and reality are often blurred. This is most evident about 12 miles east of the 20th-century building, in the depths of the Pocomoke Forest.
Brave the homegrown spooky tales and urban legends as retold by Princess Anne Ghosts. From the bloodied hook snagged in the car handle to the horrors that unfolded aboard a local schoolbus, these are legends sure to keep some up at night.
Sure, some may seem familiar, stories passed down across generations in all parts of the world. Who’s brave enough to trek into the heart of the ominous forest to test its sinister reputation? Just remember, a bus driver stepped into the depths of Pocomoke Forest, and all that remained was his skeleton.
What Will I See?
Visit Princess Anne’s Most Haunted Locations, Including:
- Teackle Mansion – Once home to a proud family, the sprawling mansion was ripped out from under the Teackles. The apparition that remains, a gliding woman in white, is an echo of the family’s sorrow and heartbreak.

- St. Andrew’s Church & Graveyard – Ethereal figures emerge from headstones dating back to the 17th century, their stories long forgotten. St. Andrew’s circulates with spectral energy, wandering apparitions and memories of an earlier age often spotted patrolling the consecrated grounds.
The Tragic Tale of Elizabeth Teackle
Spanning more than 10,000 square feet, Littleton Dennis Teackle’s estate was the pride and joy of his wife, Elizabeth Upshur. She was integral in its design, ensuring the property was everything she wanted. From modern conveniences to a budding garden, it was a dream space. Until the day that it wasn’t.
Explore the rise and fall of Teackle Mansion with Princess Anne Ghosts and uncover the tragic reason behind Elizabeth’s forlorn spirit. A stroke of bad luck and an untimely demise is forever embedded in the Teackle’s lore. When Littleton’s business failed, the family was forced to leave their vast and lavish manor.
Elizabeth took the loss especially hard. Her death just four years after ensured her spirit would always carry that grief, and carry it she does as a permanent resident of the property. A mysterious flickering flame, sudden cold spots, and the sudden appearance of a lady in white have become the mansion’s lasting legacy.
Why is Princess Anne so Haunted?
The Eternal Keeper of Furnace Town
Over 195 years ago, the Maryland Iron Company was established within Worcester County. For a spell, it enjoyed success, a success that workers like Sampson Hat took great pride in. When the company folded, leaving the fate of the aptly named Furnace Town to fate, the workers all left. Everyone except for Hat.
Hear the inspired tale of Sampson Hat from Princess Anne Ghosts and learn the true power of dedication. Even after Furnace Town fell into ruin, Hat stayed behind, knowing all that waited for him in the outside world was slavery and persecution. Even when freedom was granted, Hat kept watch of Furnace Town, and his spirit continues to do so today.
Reports of Hat’s presence have existed throughout time, even during restoration efforts on Furnace Town. His presence can be felt and often seen lingering by the decaying machinery, as if there to keep things running.
Princess Anne’s Most Haunted
A relic of the mid-19th century, the Francis Barnes House has seen much of Princess Anne’s growth. It’s watched as the neighboring Teackle Mansion was lost by its namesake family and played witness to many atrocities, some racially motivated. This timeless two-story is not without its own lingering past, with spirits of former residents like Judge Henry Laurenson Dashiell Stanford bound to their old abode.
Warmth radiates from the Washington Inn, an endearing property that once lured travelers from afar with its old-school charm. It may not have just been the inn’s appearance and hospitality that comforted guests, though. Within, an ethereal entity floats through the halls, her presence a pleasing sight for those not frightened by her sudden appearance. Spectral activity has been observed throughout the inn, from the poltergeist in the kitchen to the lingering echoes of a simpler age spotted throughout.
