When talking about haunted houses in Philadelphia, it’s almost impossible not to mention the Bishop White House.
The home was first built in 1787 by the first Bishop of the Episcopal Church, William White. White was among some of the most noteworthy figures of a thriving Philadelphia, so the size and magnitude of his home were no surprise to locals.
William White hired a vast array of different people to help manage his new large estate. One of these was a coach driver named John. Not much information is available about John except that he was a free African-American who knew how to handle a coach. He was also very much liked by William White, and the two had a close friendship.
John lived in a small apartment just behind the Bishop White House during his entire employment and even until his death. He passed away in 1793 as a result of the widespread yellow fever pandemic.
Many people report still seeing John’s spirit roaming around the home years after his death. His dark ghostly silhouette figure is what gives him the name “Shadow Man.”
It is not just local legend that whispers about the ghosts at the Bishop White House. Several books, including the famous Haunted Philadelphia by Darcy Oordt, claim that various spirits inhabit the home. It appears a woman, two strange men, and a cat dwell there.
However, the apparitions only seem to come out at night when the house is mostly empty. That said, these ghostly encounters aren’t anything new. People have claimed the Bishop White House is haunted for decades.
Human spirits aren’t the only odd entities lurking around the Bishop White House. There are many accounts of seeing a ghostly cat wander the yard.
Some believe it’s the ghost of Dr. Rush, the doctor who treated John for his yellow fever. Perhaps he has taken on a new form so that he can linger on in this life?
