Downtown Presbyterian Church

The Downtown Presbyterian Church is one of the most beautiful locations in Nashville, but it has a darker side. See more with our Nashville Ghost Tour.

Downtown Presbytarian Church

The Downtown Presbyterian Church is a historical landmark in Nashville. The church was constructed in 1851 and designed by William Strickland, who also designed the State Capitol. The building is well-known for its Egyptian Revival architecture.

The church sits nestled between numerous glass skyscrapers, creating a stunning contrast between the old and new Nashville. The spacious church can fit around 400 people.

But there’s more than meets the eye at this historic place of worship. Discover the strange and unexplainable on a ghost tour of the Downtown Presbyterian Church.

A Bloody History

Although the church’s primary purpose was to be a place of worship for Presbyterians, it served as a hospital during the Civil War. The war was devastating, especially in Tennessee.

Before 1860, Tennessee residents weren’t too enthusiastic about joining the Confederacy. However, it became the 11th and final state to join in 1861.

The rich agriculture and landscape were devastated by destruction, and Nashville was a hotspot for Confederate resources. Converting the church into a field hospital was necessary to tend to all the wounded and dead troops, leaving behind an echo of spooky occurrences.

Restless Spirits, Unsettling Sensations

Today, the Downtown Presbyterian Church is still a place of worship and a popular destination in the city. However, there have been instances of ghostly spirits roaming around the property. Many believe that the ghosts of fallen Confederate soldiers were never able to rest peacefully after their demise.

Some people who have been inside the church after hours claim to hear strange noises, such as footsteps, groans, and other spooky sounds. During the day, there have been reports of odd vibes coming from the church, but most people shrug it off if they don’t know the location’s haunted history.

The Historical and the Haunted

Like most locations in Nashville, the involvement in the Civil War is likely to have left behind some ghostly trauma. Due to the increase in reports of ghostly figures seen in the church, it has quickly become a top destination for haunted tours.

If you visit the Downtown Presbyterian Church, you can explore a vast array of different historical elements. Some go to observe the beautiful architecture, which is breathtaking. Even if you’re a skeptic or not comfortable with potentially haunted locations, you can still have a comfortable tour of the site and learn about its origin.

Our ghost tour visits this location, and our guides deliver a rich history lesson of the church and explain all the potential ghostly encounters that have happened there.
