Why is Maui so Haunted?
Chained To The Walls Of Destruction
Lahaina came into Western view in the early 1800s when the sacred home of Hawaiian royalty became the whaling center of the world. Rowdy sailors from America stopped in Lahaina between stints at sea, and the town gained a seedy reputation. Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick, even briefly docked in Lahaina. Chaos and vice reigned supreme until a code of law was written by King Kamehameha III in 1850.
Journey with Maui Ghosts to where the Hale Pa’ahao Prison once stood and learn about this treacherous time. Criminals, drunk sailors, and any other offenders were tossed into the “stuck in irons house.” Prisoners were chained to the walls and brutally punished. Their misery has made the Old Lahaina Prison one of the most haunted places in Lahaina.
Maui’s Most Haunted
Lahaina is far from the only place in Maui that is home to sacred lands and spooky secrets. One such place is the Iao Valley. Here, Kamehameha filled the rivers with blood after defeating the Chief of Maui and his army in 1790. Tales of mystical Hawaiian warriors are just as thick as the tropical underbrush filling the valley floor.
Just outside Lahainatown, some of the most disturbing haunts on the Island of Maui await. Lahainaluna High School, the oldest school in the Western United States, sits above Lahiana. Watching over the town are the shadows of Hawaiian ancestors from a great battle. The grave of academic and historian David Malo has also sparked many tales of the otherworldly at Lahainaluna.
Many schools on the islands are possessed by the spirits of former students and sacred souls alike. The Old Maui High School, which was built upon an old sugar plantation, one of the many marks of colonialism that scar the land. It has laid vacant for thirty years and explorers report all sorts of eerie and unexplainable phenomena.
Across Maui in Wailuku, The Iao Theater is considered one of the most haunted places in all of the islands. Lights flicker and disembodied voices float through the air in this theater that has been featured on the Syfy Channel show “Haunted Collector.”
