What Will I See?
Visit Helena’s Most Haunted Locations, Including:
- The Grandstreet Theatre – Before it was The Grandstreet Theatre, this building was the Unitarian Church and home to one of Helena’s kindest souls, Clara Bicknell Hodgin. She was tragically struck down by illness in 1905, but her spirit survived. Many say the theatre’s famous Tiffany Glass window holds her spirit. Her name has been seen written into the glass in the morning dew.
- Windbag Saloon and Grill – Once the most visited brothel in Helena, the Windbag Saloon and Grill has a seedy history full of federal raids, secret tunnels, and lust-fueled activity. Now, it is a favorite place to eat among Helenites and one of the most haunted places in Montana. Strange and seedy figures have been reported in the basement at 2:00 a.m., while the mirror above the bar is a portal to another world many refuse to look into.
- The Myrna Loy – This dedicated theater of the arts, named after Helena’s most famous starlet, was once the Lewis and Clark County Jail. Not only were the worst criminals in Helena once held here, but a sheriff once killed his wife in their home inside the jail in 1922. Although it was an accident, her spirit still roams these halls. She is joined by the evil energy of the jail’s most tarnished souls.

But it was once a cold, dark place, the Lewis and Clark County Jail, with the lowest level housing solitary confinement.
“The Hole” is now the women’s restroom, resulting in a spot of horror. Many women have left the bathroom screaming, touched by the residual energy lurking in this area. These frightened patrons sometimes meet the spirit of another soul trapped in the Myrna Loy, Flora Spratt.
Her husband, the town sheriff, shot her while the two of them lived in the building in 1922. Was this disaster an accident, as the sheriff claims? Discover these bloody secrets and the rest of Helena’s chilling story with Helena Hellbound Ghost Tours.

Serving Up A Side Of Spirits
Helena’s haunted history stretches back to the dusty days of the Old West. The town was once a simple gold mining operation, with little more than a few ramshackle tents and an ominous name: The Last Chance Gulch. From these murky beginnings grew Reeder’s Alley, a collection of brothels and stone buildings used to house miners. Horrifyingly, this historic part of town is still full of its former inhabitants.
Journey with Helena Hellbound Ghost Tours as we venture to this pit of misfortune. Once home to spiritualists, sex workers, and smugglers, Reeder’s Alley is uniquely haunted, even by Helena’s standards. The Stonehouse, now a restaurant, was once the home of the Duchesnay’s. They bred canaries in their home, and people came from afar to see them. But others came knocking with a darker request.
Learn how bootleggers once stored illegal liquor in the old Stonehouse and hid them so well that they weren’t found until 2008. But these bottles of hooch weren’t the only things hiding the dark corners of the Stonehouse. Servers at the restaurant have reported hearing the sounds of birds chirping in the dining room during the evening. Could the sounds of phantom footsteps so often heard be attributed to the former owners? Find out on a walking ghost tour of haunted Helena with Helena Hellbound Ghost Tours!
Helena’s Most Haunted
Helena’s most haunted places are scattered about the Queen City Of The Rockies. Some still stand in their original state, with their original inhabitants inside, while others have disappeared, and their energies are still felt. The Hanging Tree is one of Helena’s most famous Wild West landmarks but has long been torn down. However, the eleven criminals who lost their lives under its branches still haunt the neighborhood of Boot Hill.
Things don’t fare much better at the still-standing Carroll College. A room on the fourth floor is permanently closed due to reoccurring blood stains where a student died after hitting his head on a bathroom sink. Another student’s spirit repeats his final moment, jumping from the staircase. At the Kleinschmidt House, one of the many houses in Helena that simply looks haunted, the former owners still march about their home without regard for the living occupants.
While many of these spirits are peaceful, they do not take kindly to messing with their homes. The resident of Judge Theodore Brantley’s old home quickly found that out when they gutted the third floor. The Brantley Mansion is now full of haunted happenings that petrify all who live there. The massive TC Power Mansion shares a similar tale, as entrepreneur TC Power, one of the most powerful men in Helena’s history, is said to still haunt his stately manor.
