Dark Legacies
Former Confederate president Jefferson Davis had to answer for the many Union lives lost during the Civil War, and it seems his punishment has yet to end. Listen as Hampton Ghosts revisits the Civil War and Davis’ crimes, followed by a haunting that many believe to be a return of the Confederate president.
The Casemate Museum of Fort Monroe steps back in time with its exhibits of 17th-century artifacts and Civil War relics. Even from the outside, the Museum gives off the aura of a building watched over by the deceased.
Join Hampton Ghosts for a history lesson that ends with ethereal figures patrolling the museum late at night. Full-bodied apparitions have been spotted throughout the museum, their identities easily recognizable by anyone who knows early American history. Could Davis’ influence over the Confederate army have left his mark on a surviving antiquity?
What Will I See?
Visit Hampton’s Most Haunted Locations, Including:
- Fort Monroe National Monument – Formerly known as Fort Algernourne, Fort Monroe was constructed by Captain John Smith after his arrival on Virginia’s shores. Still a magnificent structure today, the fort is believed to have ties to the local legend of the Lady in White. An illicit affair led to shots ringing out in the night, spawning the presence of the meandering specter, her heart broken twice.
- Chamberlain Retirement Community – Long before housing retirees, the Chamberlain Retirement Community was a large hotel. A fire broke out one evening, engulfing the seventh floor in flames and claiming at least one life. Her future ripped away; the tragic specter returns in hopes of one day leaving the confines of her eternal prison.
- Casemate Museum of Fort Monroe – Housing years of Hampton history, the museum extends its grasp just a bit to uncover the realities of the Civil War and the man in charge of the Confederates. Find the former president tied to something within the museum, alongside his wife and the memories of his downfall.
The Ashes of Another Life
Every building has a history. The Chamberlain Retirement Community just so happens to have a tragic one that left behind a wandering spirit. Even before the final conversion from a hotel to accommodations for retirees, the specter made her presence known, with former hotel staff actively trying to bring peace to the lost soul.
In 2006, a retirement community was built from the remains of a hotel from the 1920s. The Chamberlain-Vanderbilt Hotel saw many guests come through its doors. However, long before the Chamberlain-Vanderbilt Hotel came about, the 19th-century Hygeia Hotel had already seen its fair share of tragedy.
Look deep into the past of the retirement community with Hampton Ghosts and uncover the events of March 7th, 1920, which left at least one spirit forever tied to the building. When a fire broke out on the seventh floor, not everyone was lucky enough to escape. Discover the story of the ghostly woman who tragically lost her life in the building and remains a permanent fixture on this thrilling nighttime ghost tour of Hampton.
Dead Men Tell No Tales
Is the spirit of an infamous pirate legend lurking along Hampton’s Marina Road? Crack into a classic tale of piracy and thievery as Hampton Ghosts tells the lore of Blackbeard, a pirate so well-known it’s nearly impossible to find a piece of pirate literature that doesn’t mention him.
Using the Old Point Comfort Marina to set the stage, Hampton Ghosts will direct attention across the harbor to a narrow inlet that Marina Road overlooks. Here, the borderline fantastical tales of Blackbeard continue as the long-bearded buccaneer refuses to let go of a world he once had a strong grip on.
Is the famed pirate lord searching for a treasure he once buried on the land Hampton now sits? Only the bravest and most curious of modern corsairs could ever find it, as that would mean going up against the ghostly form of one of the most feared pirates in history.
Why is Hampton so Haunted?
The Chilled Specter of St. John’s Episcopal Church Cemetery
Venture with Hampton Ghosts to the quaint Chapel of the Centurion and explore the haunted history of a 17th-century place of worship. St. John’s Episcopal Church is a ghost in its own right, having risen from the ashes of the Civil War. Though the building has its own fascinating history, Hampton Ghosts will turn your attention to an accompanying feature—the connected cemetery.
With countless bodies strewn about, it seems likely that spirits would run rampant. Built on so much death, tragedy is commonplace in a cemetery, and the tragic demise of one Hampton local has garnered attention from the living. Get to know its most prominent ghost residents with Hampton Ghosts.
Cold spots and whispers leave cemetery visitors on edge as the otherworldly presence that stalks the grounds keeps a close watch on her own grave. Listen as Hampton Ghosts sets the stage for a haunted cemetery home to a nefarious ghostly presence spawned from a suspected murder.

Feel a chill as the ethereal locomotive cuts through the night, trapped in an endless loop that may never end. Keep your eyes peeled on this heart-pounding tour of Hampton, as you may spot the train as it makes its rounds near Mile Post Zero.

See A Different Side of This Historical Colonial Town
An unmistakably beautiful spot in Hampton, Continental Park has the makings for normalcy untouched by the unexplained. Then you spot it – a rusted structure jutting out from the depths of the nearby sea as if coated in the blood of at least three immigrants who were killed for what can only be assumed to be greed.
Thimble Shoal Lighthouse’s proximity to the incidents has made it the likely bind for the wandering lost souls. Gaze out onto the still waters around the lighthouse with Hampton Ghosts for a closer inspection of the otherworldly activity said to plague the building.
A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity to Uncover Hampton’s Hauntings
