Why is Dahlonega so Haunted?

An Unholy Pact

When the sun sets, Vickery House transforms into a notorious spectral sentinel. Once the home of Dahlonega’s elite and now the home of the UNG Appalachian Studies Department, the ghost of its original inhabitant refuses to relinquish her claim. Dahlonega Ghosts introduces you to the tale of the uneasy pact that silenced the house’s strange disturbances.

Legend says the university made an agreement with Mrs. Vickery’s spirit: the building belongs to her at night, while the living can use it by day. Some say it was a bargain made in desperation, but others believe it’s the only way to keep her temper in check. When night falls, an eerie chill sweeps through the air as she watches from the shadows.

Students and staff have reported strange visions, with Mrs. Vickery standing in doorways, her rigid form a barrier between them and escape. But those who don’t heed the warnings often find themselves haunted by unsettling dreams of the ghostly matron, who watches them with a cold, judgmental stare. What could possibly be her reason for keeping such a tight grip on her home? Find out tonight on this hauntingly good Dahlonega ghost tour.

A Square of Specters and Secrets

Dahlonega’s eerie connection to the dark forces from its painful past can be seen and felt at the Public Square, where nearly every old building holds the twisted tales of the doomed souls. Reports of disembodied footsteps and apparitions abound in this area, and the spirits lurking in the shadows of the Jones-Leibel House have startled locals and left unsuspecting visitors terrified to the bone.

Follow Dahlonega Ghosts to the haunted heart of the city and hear the unsettling stories of strange, inexplicable events and disembodied voices that seem to cling to Jones-Leibel House. Unearth the spine-chilling secrets of one of the most haunted buildings in this mountain town and see what makes the seemingly peaceful Victorian beauty the complete opposite of warm and welcoming when night falls.

The ghostly echoes of a young physician and two-time mayor of Dahlonega who lived and died in this building seem determined to stay, even in death. His ghostly presence may be more of a watchful guardian than a vengeful specter. But the ominous energy of a malevolent spirit in the attic signifies the presence of something far more sinister, and it’ll take a walk deep in the dead of night with Dahlonega Ghosts to find out what truly lurks within.

Dahlonega’s Most Haunted

The site of the old Crimson Moon may be a great spot for music and gathering today, but in the ghostly world, it’s known for the hazy figure of a little girl in a white dress known for her playful giggles. Just outside the town, Tilley Bend leads to the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the infamous Blue Ridge Witch still casts her brooding presence over the quiet forest, sending shivers through all who dare to visit.

The site of the Old Lumpkin County Jail stands as a chilling reminder of Dahlonega’s darkest moments when justice was swift and often merciless. Locals have experienced an overwhelming sense of dread around this place, and the spirits of those who suffered in its walls are forever trapped in a cycle of torment.

Visitors and staff at Gold City’s historic Holly Theatre have reported phantom applause, disembodied voices, and shadowy figures moving from the shadows. Among the restless spirits said to haunt this venue is the ghost of a popular 19th-century actor and brother of the infamous assassin behind the murder of beloved President Abraham Lincoln.
