Charlotte’s Haunted History

Initially settled by early immigrants from Germany and Ireland in the mid-18th century, Charlotte is one of the oldest colonial cities in the nation. It earned its nickname as the “Queen City” after the German princess and British consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Despite this nod to the monarchs, it was one of the earliest cities to rebel against European rule leading up to the Revolutionary War.

Throughout its history, Charlotte has been a thriving economic hub, known at various times for its railroads, cotton processing, and the first US gold rush. Charlotte even had its own currency mint until the onset of the Civil War, when the Confederate Army seized it.

The city’s economic reputation continues today, as Charlotte is still home to many major US banks and other financial institutions, as well as museums focused on telling this fascinating history.

Overall, there is no shortage of historical sites in Charlotte to explore.
