Charlotte, NC is a vibrant cultural hub with a history dating back to before the Revolutionary War. The Queen City is a popular destination for those looking to experience the warmth and richness of tradition that the South offers.
What visitors might not be as familiar with, however, is the dark lore and haunted history hidden beneath Charlotte’s glamorous image, some of which you’ll find at the McNinch House Restaurant.
The McNinch House Restaurant isn’t just any old pub. It’s a spot to grab a bite and share a meal with some fellow ghost enthusiasts. Indeed, its dining hall is an entrance to some of the most chilling parts of Charlotte’s haunted past.
Located in the center of one of Charlotte’s most historic neighborhoods, the McNinch House is a fine dining restaurant.
Before it became famous for its spooky happenings, the Queen Anne-style structure was home to one of Charlotte’s most famous mayors and business people, Samuel McNinch.
McNinch purchased the home in the early 20th century for his family and filled it with luxurious decor and one-of-a-kind artifacts from his travels.
Then tragedy struck.
The sudden death of his daughter, Mattie, left McNinch devastated. He abandoned the home and all of its possessions, leaving them to gather dust for several decades.
Eventually, an investor revived, renovated, and eventually reopened to the public as a fine-dining restaurant. However, the spirit of Mayor McNinch’s daughter is still reputed to roam its halls. Staff and customers alike have reported encounters with Mattie while trying to enjoy a multi-course meal.
Inexplicable kitchen mishaps, missing pantry supplies, and reports of cold drafts are only some of the stories that give credence to the theory that Mattie McNinch refuses to leave her family’s property. The front sitting room, a favorite of Mattie’s, is particularly known for mysterious occurrences.
Whether Mattie’s ghost joins your dinner party or not, an evening at the McNinch House is a culinary experience you won’t soon forget.
