Charleston’s Haunted History

A major settlement of the original thirteen colonies, Charleston has a long and extensive history — and many well-preserved historical sites to boot. Settled in 1670, it is one of the oldest cities in the nation. Its original name was Charles Towne, in honor of King Charles II.

Much of Charleston’s long history is evident in the brightly colored colonial-style homes that line its cobblestone streets. Located on the water, Charleston quickly became a thriving port city, meaning that there was lots of wealth in the area to architect such uniquely gorgeous buildings that have withstood the test of time and the battles of the Civil War.

Although the city has a rich history, we must address Charleston’s significance as an economic hub primarily derived from its role in the slave trade of the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, many sites associated with the slave trade recall the past’s true horrors through museums and other such sources of historical education.

Overall, there is no shortage of haunted historical sites to explore.
