Beaufort’s Most Haunted
The historic sites of Beaufort are laden with spirits. The Castle on Craven Street holds several specters behind its bricks. Its stony walls saw the dying breaths of many when it served as a military hospital in 1861. Even stranger is its resident spirit, a 15th-century jester dwarf who held tea parties with the former owner’s daughter.
A more modest home in Beaufort holds another restless spirit. Locals report that objects move on their own and the sound of disembodied footsteps. Bizarre bangs and voices are also heard, keeping guests awake with fright.
The Gabriel House is thought to contain the presence of a past owner who fell to his death from the roof. Perhaps his fitful ghost lingers on to complete tasks left unfinished while alive.
