Max's Taphouse

There’re lots to cheers to at Max’s Taphouse. Check out the US Ghost Adventures Tour of Haunted Baltimore to learn more about this old saloon’s history.

Max's Taphouse

From its famous Maryland blue crabs to its frequent presence on the silver screen, Baltimore has tons of culture to unearth.

But be wary of digging too deep. You may uncover a haunted past that refuses to stay in the past.

If you’re keen to learn a bit more about Baltimore’s history through the lens of some of its oldest and most haunted saloons, the iconic Max’s Taphouse is a must-see. After all, what better place to share ghost stories than over a pint with the spirits who lived that history themselves?

The Past That Won’t Stay Past

Originally founded as an eastern seaport town, Baltimore was known in its early days for its fishing industry and its strategic wartime location along the Patapsco River. Later in the 19th and 20th centuries, it established itself as a massive immigration hub, second only in the nation to Ellis Island.

Much of this history is still deeply entrenched in many of its older neighborhoods, particularly Fell’s Point, which sits along the harbor, and Little Italy. These neighborhoods are rich with well-preserved sites once frequented by the city’s early residents. Many of their favorite old saloons remain, whether you’re passing through or looking to stay, perhaps forever.

Baltimore’s oldest districts continue to be the favorite haunts of sailors and soldiers of a bygone era. Local legends say they are still getting drinks at these historic sites, making them all the more thrilling to visit.

Historic Brewery or Haunted Slaughterhouse?

Located in the heart of Fell’s Point, Max’s Taphouse has been central to Baltimore culture since the mid 19th century. It began as a brothel and slaughterhouse, but these businesses eventually combined into a singular saloon in the early 20th century. By that point, the site was already known for strange and dangerous happenings.

In the years since, it has also operated as a disco, a music venue, and, today, as a brewery. The bar’s past lives contribute to the city’s dynamic culture and the site’s reputation as a place haunted with past misadventures.

The employees of Max’s Taphouse love to relay their ghostly encounters late at night in the brewery. Though most often these come in the form of headless chicken sightings in the basement, there are also several human ghosts that like to hang around.

A woman in a white dress regularly wreaks havoc on the third floor. Meanwhile, some patrons have reported seeing a man float through walls and play with the beer bottles by the bar.

These are just some of the many haunted tales Max’s Taphouse has amassed in its long and varied history. It’s never a dull night out at this brewery.
