Why is Akron so Haunted?
An Unquiet Past Seeps Into The Present
Echoes of bygone eras reverberate within the walls of many of Akron’s historic buildings. Venture with Akron Ghosts to a 19th-century schoolhouse and breathe in stories of its eerie antiquity.
Shiver in the shadow of this 180-year-old building as accounts of the nearby Perkins Stone Mansion and its uncanny occurrences are unveiled. This historic home-turned-museum contains many ghosts within its bounds, including those of queer child spirits and a phantom figure believed to be a former owner.
Hear the stories told by volunteers, visitors, and guides of this house museum, all of whom have experienced otherworldly activity in one form or another. They say the past is a living thing — a statement that seems to be doubly true inside Akron’s historic homes.
Akron’s Most Haunted
Akron is a city that bristles so thickly with ghostly beings and dwellings that you couldn’t possibly visit them all in one day. Consider the Hower House on Fir Hill. Although time has moved on since Henry Hower shirked his promise to his wife on her deathbed, the spirit of his first wife has not.
According to many accounts, Susan Hower continues to stew in her resentment within the Hower House, embittered by what she saw as a brazen infidelity. Had Henry Hower not promised his first wife he’d never remarry after her passing, Akron might not have such an indignant spirit in its midst.
On Power Street stands a haunt that’s far less charming. A place few ever hoped to see the inside of, the former site of the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center contains a painful and heartbreaking history. Haunted not only by the many wayward teens who passed through its halls, it holds a far sadder tale as well.
The ghost of a former matron as caring as she was kind, lingers on within the building even though her duties have long since ended. Her distressing presence continues in footsteps, objects that shift or move, and a curious heaviness on the second floor that soaks the air.
